Qualitative data collection and analysis
Qualitative research helps us to get beneath and understand complex employment issues. It produces rich but sometimes complex data that requires concise and expert interpretation and summary.
Our approach to qualitative data collection and analysis is flexible and driven by project needs. We select and apply appropriate techniques for each project according to the perspectives and backgrounds of research participants as well as the research aims.
Contact: Becci Newton
Our researchers are expert at:
- face-to-face and telephone interviews;
- focus groups;
- developing case studies;
- exploratory and theory-driven approaches;
- participant observation;
- repertory grid method;
- cognitive interviews;
- critical incident, vignette and life history mapping; and
- participatory appraisal techniques.
We conduct research across the UK and overseas, both face-to-face and making use of technologies such as Skype, video conferencing or social media.
We have specialist staff skilled in using qualitative software analysis packages such as Atlas.ti and Nvivo, and who develop bespoke coding frames for each project.
Our staff are also knowledgeable in how to apply Qualitative Comparative Analysis approaches to policy evaluations: using this as part of a multi-method design to test theories of change and develop typologies of cases that provide an insight into what works, under what conditions and for whom.
We provide results in a variety of formats to meet client needs, including written reports, case studies, presentations, mindmaps, infographics, data visualisation, podcasts and workshops.
