The 2004/05 Student Income and Expenditure Survey (SIES) in Northern Ireland, commissioned by the Department for Employment and Learning, provides an authoritative assessment of students' financial position before the changes introduced by the Higher Education Act (2004).
The survey was conducted jointly by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and IES as an extension to the SIES in England and Wales (commissioned by Department for Education and Skills and the National Assembly of Wales). It followed the same methodology but focused on Northern Ireland domiciled higher education students at Northern Ireland institutions only.
