    In partnership with the Centre for Social and Economic Inclusion, IES evaluated Skills Coaching, a careers and coaching service for out of work adults. The evaluation involved: case-studies in nine of the areas running Skills Coaching trials; a review of literature on employability and employment and skills policy; an analysis of the pilots’ management information; and an assessment of the cost of delivering the service.

    The Recession

    This paper examines the impact of recession on the labour market through three lenses: Firstly, it presents a summary of the key evidence to date on redundancies and employment decline in the UK, with international comparisons, identifying which labour market groups and geographical areas have been most affected. Secondly, it reviews and assesses the government policy response, focused on initiatives to support employment. Thirdly, it reviews employer responses to recession (action which affects current employees, and their plans for the future), and questions the level of employer engagement with government policy.

    The New Deal for Young Unemployed People: A Summary of Progress

    The New Deal for young unemployed people was a key element in the Government's Welfare to Work strategy. It aimed to help young people who had been unemployed and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for six months or more to find work and to improve their longer term employability.     Understanding Worklessness in Newham: Final Report

    The London Borough of Newham commissioned an analysis of worklessness within the borough with a particular focus on understanding those who had been out of the labour market for long periods of time, and those who had never worked. The research involved a literature review, analysis of secondary datasets to provide an overview of the scale and characteristics of worklessness locally, and qualitative interviews with a range of people, including stakeholders providing services to workless groups and workless individuals in the borough.

    Activity Agreements (AA) were piloted in eight areas of England between April 2006 and March 2011 and were designed to help re-engage young people (aged 16 or 17) not in employment, education or training (NEET). This report evaluates the final 12-month extended period of these pilots (known as Pilot 3).

    Long-term Evaluation of Self-employment Assistance Provided by the Prince's Trust

    This report contains initial findings from a three-year study, following a sample of young people (aged 18-30) receiving business start-up support from The Prince's Trust. The study aimed to identify the wider benefits of such support, in comparison with other labour market interventions and, in particular, to look at the impact of such programmes on longer-term employability.

    Employers and the New Deal for Disabled People - Qualitative Research, First Wave

    This publication is no longer available. This report contributed to the national evaluation of the New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP). It sets out the first results from research on employer awareness of, and involvement with NDDP. Other linked studies contributed evidence on other stakeholders, particularly customers of the programme and the job brokers delivering it.

  • Evaluation of Jobcentre Plus Advisory Services in Integrated Children's Centres in Communities First Areas

    The Welsh Government (WG) commissioned the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to lead a review of its pilot which introduced Jobcentre Plus-led Advisory services into Integrated Children’s Centres in Communities First (CF) areas. The pilot was known as the Employment Services in Integrated Children’s Centres (ESICC). The project was co-funded by Communities First and Jobcentre Plus (JCP). IES had experience of evaluating the Work-Focused Services in the Children’s Centres Pilot in England. This report comprises findings from the evaluation to provide information to the Welsh Government (WG) on the progress and achievements of the ESICC pilot.
