Retaining and supporting working carers

Thu 24 Apr 2025 09:30 to Thu 24 Apr 2025 10:30
Online Event - Exclusively for HR Network members

Event summary

This event will share insights from the IES Working Carers Research project, which focuses on those caring for an ill, older or disabled family member or friend. The event will preview examples of workplace practices which have made a difference to carers and employers alike. We will consider the real-world implications of the findings and how organisations can adjust their practice to maximise the impact of their offer for staff with informal caring responsibilities.

Background

Informal carers are one of the fastest growing demographics within the UK working age population. An ageing population has led to a greater and growing need for unpaid care. With increases in State Pension age in some countries and other factors, the number of people combining work and unpaid care is likely to significantly increase and employers need to be ready. Carers leave is welcome but not sufficient and without carer-friendly workplace policies, working carers are likely to reduce their working hours or quit altogether. IES research includes a rapid evidence review and interviews with carers, employers and employment support advisers to identify what support works for carers and employers. For this project we did not include caring for a child (unless the child has a disability or long-term illness).

This session will explore the key areas that organisations should consider, including:

  • Differentiating the needs of working carers from working parents
  • Employer examples of carer-friendly policies and practices
  • Identifying staff working alongside caring
  • Communicating your offer
  • Understanding success

How will participants/delegates benefit from attending?

The webinar will deepen participants understanding of what support employers are offering their staff juggling work with caring responsibilities, and with what results.
