CITB: Research into careers in Construction - Privacy Notice

In line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in this privacy notice for research participants, we explain the legal basis for data processing for this careers in construction research. This includes who will have access to your personal data, how your data will be used, stored and deleted and who you can contact with a query or a complaint.

Who we are

The research is being undertaken by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) on behalf of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for purposes connected with the Construction Industry Board’s (CITB) role as an Industrial Training Board in accordance with the Industrial Training Act 1982. For the purpose of data protection legislation CITB is the data controller for the personal data processed as part of the research.  This means they are responsible for deciding the purpose and legal basis for processing personal data.

What is the legal basis for processing my data?

In order for our use of your personal data to be lawful we need to be able to rely on a condition for processing under the UK General Data Protection Legislation (also known as the ‘GDPR’).

CITB processes your data on the basis  that the “processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the data controller” (Article 6(1)(e) of the GDPR).

Who will have access to my personal data?

If you are invited and choose to take part in a research discussion, the information you give will only be used for purposes of this study. Please be aware that, if contacted, you are under no obligation to take part in the research. 

You will be asked for your explicit consent to: take part in the interview, be named as a contributor to the research (if an employer or expert); and be quoted in the final report. You will have the opportunity to review the quote and the context it is used before granting permission. The research team’s analysis and presentation of the findings will otherwise be at an aggregate level, where you will not be named.

How will my data be treated?

If you are invited and choose to take part in an interview, the data you give will be used for research purposes only. IES will produce a report that summarises the main findings from all the interviews. Individuals will not be named, nor will any information be included that could reveal their identity, unless you provide explicit permission to be named in the report.

Your personal information will be securely deleted from the IES systems six months after the project is complete and the final report has been published (the project is currently estimated to end in September 2025).

The research team will process your data in accordance with data protection law which includes keeping it secure and only using it where there is a fair and lawful basis to do so.

What say do I have in this?

You do not have to provide any information that you do not want to.

You have the right to withdraw the information you have provided as part of the interviews or roundtables within fourteen (14) days of your interview date. If you have taken part in an interview or roundtable but would like to withdraw your information, please contact: kate.alexander@employment-studies.co.uk.

CITB will hold your personal data in accordance with the CITB Privacy Notice and any request to delete your personal data will be processed in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Notice which can be found online at citb.co.uk/privacy.

Furthermore, under the GDPR you have a number of rights as an individual, even after you have given the information and consented to it being used for research purposes.

You have the right:

  • to ask us for access to information about you that we hold
  • to have your personal data rectified, if it is inaccurate or incomplete
  • to request the deletion or removal of personal data where there is no compelling reason for its continued processing
  • to restrict our processing of your personal data (i.e. permitting its storage but no further processing)
  • to object to direct marketing (including profiling) and processing for the purposes of scientific/historical research and statistics
  • not to be subject to decisions based purely on automated processing where it produces a legal or similarly significant effect on you
